SouthWest Judo Academy is proud to share that Coach Perry Lugg recently travelled to Adelaide to complete the Dynamic Balance for Life training program under the expert guidance of Meera Verma and Michael Headland from Adelaide University Judo Club.
Dynamic Balance for Life is an evidence-based initiative designed to support older adults in maintaining their independence and reducing their risk of injury from falls. Developed through a partnership between the Adelaide University Judo Club and the University of Adelaide’s G-TRAC Centre, the program combines low-intensity strength and balance work with techniques drawn from judo to teach participants how to land safely and recover confidently if a fall does occur.
A pilot study conducted in 2021 and published in The Journal of Frailty and Ageing in April 2023 confirmed the program’s safety and feasibility for older adults. Since then, the program has gained national recognition, with Judo Australia proudly partnering to support its delivery across the country.
Each course runs for 12 weeks, with one 60-minute session per week led by accredited judo coaches who have completed the Dynamic Balance training. Sessions are structured to gradually build strength, improve balance, and introduce simple but effective fall prevention and recovery strategies.
Coach Perry’s completion of the course represents an exciting step forward for SouthWest Judo Academy, as we look to launch our own Dynamic Balance for Life classes in the near future to better support our community’s ageing population.
