From 3–4 May 2025, SouthWest Judo Academy was proudly represented by six athletes across the Senior and Junior divisions at the 2025 Mandurah Oceania Open & Cup, an IJF World Ranking event held at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
The two-day tournament brought together over 170 athletes from 14 nations, with world-ranking points on the line and the opportunity for our local judoka to test themselves against international competition on home soil.
Alyssa Fry Claims Bronze in Senior Women’s Under 52kg
In a standout performance, Alyssa Fry secured a bronze medal in the Senior Women’s -52kg division. After a semi-final loss to Australia’s Callie Bannister, Alyssa bounced back in the bronze medal match against WA rival Maelie Tournier. Despite trailing by waza-ari and osaekomi, she reversed the momentum and secured an ippon with her own hold-down.
Strong Performances from SouthWest Athletes
Olivia Knights competed in both the Senior and Junior Women’s -57kg categories. In the Seniors, she lost a narrow quarter-final to Hong Kong’s Wan Lok Lau (yuko) and was later defeated in the bronze medal match by Mackenzie Cook (AUS). The following day in the Juniors, she faced the same two opponents again in reverse order, but unfortunately missed the podium after two ippon losses.
Giulio Gerace opened his Senior Men’s -73kg campaign with an ippon victory over Hong Kong’s Pak Hin Ng, scoring both waza-ari and yuko before the final score. He was later defeated in the quarter-final and repechage, but delivered a strong performance in a highly competitive division.
Shane Rigby represented Australia in the Senior Men’s -90kg category, where he was defeated by WA teammate Angus Baird in the quarter-final. Baird went on to take silver. Shane also fought in the bronze medal match, where he was defeated by Robert Vukovich (AUS).
Georgia Aiesi Represents Samoa
Georgia Aiesi, representing Samoa, competed in the Senior Women’s -70kg division. In a round-robin format, she scored an ippon victory over Australia’s Ruby Gojevic before falling to Taylah Hayes (AUS). She advanced to the bronze medal match, where she was narrowly defeated by Ella Kelso (NZL).
