Sensei Jacob and Sensei Perry Return from Prestigious Kodokan Seminar in Tokyo

  • Written by Jacob Read
  • on 17 March 2024

Last week, Sensei Jacob and Sensei Perry represented SouthWest Judo Academy at an intensive, week-long International Seminar at the world-renowned Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan. Organized jointly by Judo Australia and the Kodokan, this seminar delved deeply into both theoretical and practical aspects of judo, highlighting the teachings of Jigoro Kano, the Kodokan Dan Grading System, and advanced techniques.

Seminar Highlights

  • Daily Training: 8 hours of focused sessions on nage-waza (throwing techniques), katame-waza (groundwork techniques), and kata under the expert guidance of Kodokan instructors.
  • Special Representation: Sensei Jacob attended as CEO of Judo WA, alongside Calvin Knoester from Kano Judo Schools, Judo WA’s Sport Development Officer.
  • Collaborative Discussions: A meeting between our head coach, Sensei Simon (Chair of Judo Australia), Jacob, Calvin, and the Kodokan’s International Department explored the exciting possibility of bringing a similar seminar to Perth, opening new doors for judo practitioners in Western Australia.

This enriching experience not only strengthened the technical knowledge and leadership of our Senseis but also fostered invaluable international connections.

Looking Ahead

We are excited about the potential of hosting a similar Kodokan seminar in Perth, providing local judoka with an incredible opportunity to learn from the best.

A big congratulations to Sensei Jacob and Sensei Perry for their hard work and dedication, and a heartfelt thank you to Judo Australia and the Kodokan for making this opportunity possible. The knowledge gained will surely enhance the judo experience for our entire community. 🥋🌏
